Most people know very little about transferring money or currency exchange - and why should they - the closest they get to this type of transaction is when they buy some travellers checks or get a few pounds or dollars transferred into whatever local currency they need for their vacation. When they do that the transaction is either handled by the travel agency where they bought their holiday, or by their bank.

What more logical step when you come to transfer the funds to buy your own home than to use the services of your bank again?

Okay. Banks are professional organisations well used to transferring and handling lots of money. But banks are also businesses and some of them very profitable businesses indeed. They make profits by charging their customers (you) for the services they provide. That’s fair enough. But, what is not generally known is that your bank may charge you as much as $1,800 to send £30,000 from, for example, the United Kingdom to the United States.
That’s four percent!

Of course, like so many bank charges those relating to currency conversions and transfers are kept well hidden. Like everything else in life these days you have to keep alert to all the possible pitfalls.

When you go to the bank and say,

The bank will tell you something like,

Sounds great!
But when the bank says “the rate is $1.60” it really means that is what THEIR rate is!

The real rate is usually five to six cents or so higher, or as much as $1.66 per GBP in the case of our example. You should have received 1.66 times £30,000, or $49,800, but the bank pockets the difference of $1,800 (over £1,000) as pure profit, and they charge you an extra £20 as well!
